BuildBIM's Leading Role in the O Mahurangi – Penlink Project: Digital Engineering Excellence in Action
In the north of Auckland, a transformative transport project is underway to significantly improve travel times between Silverdale, Whangaparāoa, and the Hibiscus Coast, with the construction of a two-lane road that includes bridges, shared walking and cycling paths. But beyond the tangible structures lies a world of intricate planning, design, and construction. This is where BuildBIM comes in.
Driving Digital Excellence with Waka Kotahi
Commissioned by the Alliance, and led by Waka Kotahi – the NZ Transport Agency, BuildBIM has been entrusted with the crucial role of Digital Engineering Lead. In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, it's our commitment to staying ahead of the curve that has enabled us to bring unmatched value to this ambitious project. We're not working in isolation; our role in this project is underpinned by a collaborative alliance with stalwarts like Fulton Hogan, HEB, Aurecon, and Tonkin & Tailor.
An Alliance of Powerhouses
One of the standout features of our involvement is our synergy with our partners. We recognize that the whole is indeed greater than the sum of its parts. By combining our digital engineering prowess with Fulton Hogan's contracting expertise, HEB's robust contracting solutions, Aurecon's design insights, and Tonkin & Tailor's innovative design strategies, we've formed a fantastic team.
The journey has been characterized by strong teamwork, cross-disciplinary problem-solving, and a shared vision. When challenges arise, as they often do in projects of this scale, our collective digital capabilities, innovative tools, and solutions-oriented mindset ensure we tackle them head-on.
Redefining Digital Workflows with Revizto
Central to our digital strategy for the O Mahurangi – Penlink project is the implementation of Revizto. This state-of-the-art tool facilitates multi-disciplinary model coordination, model federation, and issue tracking, offering unparalleled advantages during both the design and construction phases.
But what truly sets our approach apart is the design + build alliance.
Our design workflows are directly linked with the construction BEP (BIM Execution Plan). This ensures a seamless transition from the drawing board to the ground, reducing inefficiencies and ensuring all stakeholders are on the same page.
We have developed new workflows in producing an Asset Management Database System that is dynamically linked to the BIM model elements. Through leveraging the information that exists in the Design models, we were able to connect with ESRI ArcGIS through Autodesk Civil 3D directly and produce a geospatial information model that conforms to the requirements set out by the client, Waka Kotahi. The AMDS is linked to the BIM bi-directionally, a first-in-class for this type of project in New Zealand.
Conclusion: Pioneering the Future with Digital Engineering
The O Mahurangi – Penlink project is not just about laying down roads and pathways; it's about shaping the future of Auckland's transportation. BuildBIM, alongside our esteemed partners, is proud to be at the forefront of this evolution, harnessing the best of digital engineering, innovation, and collaborative spirit.
We're excited to continue our journey with Waka Kotahi and our alliance partners, creating legacies and pioneering new ways to envision, design, and build. Together, we're not just building roads; we're paving the way for the future.
